I guess it is also important to mention that I have a huge love for music and I can never get enough of it. My dad thinks that I should study economics like you did but I think that I am a musician deep down in my soul. My dad does not have any confidence in me but that is okay because he’s a boring person. I think that I’m going to succeed and I’m going to be very proud when I do.

And here comes the million-dollar question – how much photo shopping or enhancements should you do to these photos before confirming and committing them to the wedding photo album?

This is a tricky one. There are many factors that affect the acceptability of enhancements to wedding photos. They vary by country, race, religion and even individual couple’s taste. But generally speaking, there are two schools of thought.

Photojournalistic School

If you or the couple see photography as a method to record truthfully the events of the day, then it is highly likely that any form of enhancements will be frowned upon. I find this thinking very prevalent among my clients from Europe especially Germany and the Nordic states. These couples often tell me in advance they want me to take things as they are. In fact they caution their guests that there will not be any posed photos so don’t bother smiling for the photographer. After the wedding, they specifically tell me they do not want ANY changes made to the photos. But I often tell them I need to at least adjust the photos for contrast and brightness. Otherwise, I am very happy with these types of clients because photojournalism is also a preferred approach for me, at least for weddings and other lifetime events that in my opinion are “sacred” and must be preserved “as is”.

Eye Candy School

Or at least that’s what I call them. There’s a group of photographers who want to win photographic awards. And so they enhance photos to make them more appealing to the judges. The photo shopping done could be heavy, to make the photos look almost surreal so that they catch the eye of the judges. This is where you see bluer than blue skies and the bride with the perfect complexion with oh-so-big eyes. But it’s not just the photographers. There are also a huge percentage of wedding couples that also subscribe to this school of thought. They feel that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to look good – so the more anything can be done (including photo shopping) to make them look great can only be encouraged. I had a client once who refused to pay me because I did not Photoshop away his wrinkles!!!

So why school of thought do you belong? There is no wrong or right in these things. But my advice is if an approach is uncomfortable and not natural to you, then do state up front during the pre-meetings so that your client can be sure what you do not do. Expectations will be better managed. I’ve often referred prospective clients to other photographers who can better deliver the type of photos they want. Tough but necessary. Happy Shooting!

I really like that Google fixes my spelling mistakes most of the time. It is funny that so many people have the same tendencies to misspell common words. I cannot believe that so many people have typed in a funny spelling of this word or that word. I think that one of the most hilarious ones that I have ever seen while conducting searches on the Internet is probably utube. You can take a guess at what the person was trying to search. But who does not know how to spell you? I guess maybe they are just abbreviating. But that does not make a lot of sense to me. Why abbreviate if you are looking for something so specific? I guess maybe the people who are searching are just kind of lazy. Not me though I try to never misspell words when I am using the Internet. I also try to never misspell words in real life. That is because I am very self-conscious about my intelligence. And I did not want to appear stupid. Or like I do not know how to spell.

My dad loves The Stooges. He grew up listening to them because they started out not too far from where he was raised. He didn’t know any of them personally but some of his friends did so it was just natural that he would like them too. It helps that they are really amazing musicians too! For his birthday this year, I wanted to really surprise him with something nice. I was tired of buying lame gifts like a tie or cologne when it was not what he really wanted. We live in a culture of winning. Consequently, every time we lose, no matter how trivial, we are castigated for being incompetent even though it is rarely true. For me, this is a very demented way to live because success is all about feeling satisfied in whatever you’re doing. It is not supposed to be measured against other people’s accomplishments or track records.

Life is all about giving your best shot without fear of failure or humiliation. I remember growing up I dream of becoming the next Michael Jordan. The first step was to join my school’s basketball varsity team but I’m too short to play and was a freshman. My first tryout turned out to be a complete disaster and I got cut even before I can wow them with my dribbling and shooting skills. I remember feeling so low and ready to give up but then my dad showed up with a new pair of basketball shoes. He told to me hold my head high because I’m a winner in his books. When I asked why, he said because I did not give up and I tried even though I failed. That is success.

I love the work of Rodney White. The prints and canvases he makes have a vintage look and feel to them, but have an uplifting message attached to them. Being a fan of vintage travel prints, I have a number of his works on my own walls. The first one I saw was at Target. It is a picture of a motorcycle, and the print looks weathered and worn. When I was much younger I used to love to sing. My relatives would constantly have to deal with me trying to attract their attention so that they would pay attention to me while I sung the lyrics of my favorite song at them. My parents were very supportive of what I loved to do and even paid for me to get some voice lessons which I loved doing for awhile. Towards high school I started getting more interested in acting after I joined the drama club. I performed in various productions that we put on, both musical and normal stage plays. This continued through out high school and it grew in to quite a passion for me. In college I knew that it was what I wanted to do for a living but it was hard to find steady work, luckily a good friend of mine got me a job doing some voice over acting.

Let them participate and the humor ball roll and you will be soon the funniest person around.

I have a teen at home who is almost failing in her natural science class. I asked my daughter what is wrong with science because I was really concerned. When she was younger she loved the subject and it goes well with her very curious nature so her grades slipping this bad was really a red light.

She told me that the problem was not exactly the subject but her teacher who happens to be the most boring person on the planet. My daughter is the type of person who is easily amused so I believed her.
